Here you have Horticultura Brasileira 37(3), 2019. Once again, we bring you high-quality technical and scientific information concerning vegetable crops and aromatic, condimental, ornamental, and medicinal plants.

Our invited article revisits an issue that was quite frequent a few years ago, but lost emphasis lately, although still relevant: urban- and peri-urban agriculture. And Dr. Gomes and colleagues wise and successfully placed into perspective the use of urban and peri-urban agriculture, going beyond its role in food production. They discuss the potential of urban- and peri-urban agriculture to, for example, reframe the city landscape, contribute to urban security, and preserve natural resources within the urban perimeter, and present the case of São Luís, an island city, where the rural zone virtually no longer exists.

Finally, we would like to communicate that Horticultura Brasileira, following the trends, and with the agreement of the board of the Brazilian Association for Horticultural Science, will be terminating its printed versions in 2019. Therefore, our next issue will be the last one in paper. We will continue printing a few copies of every issue for archive purposes, to preserve Horticultura Brasileira's memory, and to assure that the information published in the journal, one means or another, will be always available.

Dear all,

The 2nd issue of Horticultura Brasileira v. 37, 2019, is launched. On the invited article, we give attention to the current re-discovery of the importance of medicinal plants and the natural compounds derived from them. Professor Cardoso and collaborators bring to the spot the possibility of producing these compounds in vitro, in biofactories, and discuss the potentialities and challenges of such systems.

We go on progressively implementing improvements on Horticultura Brasileira in the process of manuscript submission and reviewing. Although some of these changes are not noticeable at first, their positive impact on the process will be soon evident.

Once again, the Editorial Board thanks the support and confidence from those that daily interact with us.

Dear all,

This issue of Horticultura Brasileira, the 4th of volume 36, closes our collection in 2018. Another year is over and, at our secretary, a new one has already begun! In the cover article, an interesting survey on the characteristics, challenges, and perspectives of the protected cultivation of vegetables in the main pole of this production system in Brasília, the federal capital. The study was carried out by Débora Albernaz and Flávia Clemente, from Embrapa Hortaliças, with thorough support of the local agricultural authorities and the extension service, and, of course, the priceless collaboration of the farmers. Many  informations and conclusions they present here are very likely valid also to your very own neighborhood. Check it out!

We are preparing some improvements for the coming year in Horticultura Brasileira, in line with the mounting demand for transparency, reliability, and promptness in scientific publication. Authors and readers will greatly benefit from them.

Last, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you, who helped to run Horticultura Brasileira for its 36th year in a row! I can assure this is not a trivial achievement, and those involved in scientific editorial affairs will surely vouch!

We are launching the third issue of Horticultura Brasileira, volume 36, 2018.

The cover article critically reviews a cutting-edge subject: the use of the CRISPR genome editing system in plant breeding. The paper didactically explains the dynamics of genome editing using the CRISPR/Cas system and goes beyond by reviewing what has been done so far using this tool in some vegetables and exploiting its potentialities in the breeding of horticultural crops. This thorough, yet straightforward, review offers you a very reason to get acquainted with CRISPR genome editing.

An important point to get back to: Horticultura Brasileira continues to accept submissions in Portuguese and Spanish, although our publishing idiom is exclusively English from 2018 on. Please contact us for further elaboration on the subject.

Finally, we would like to welcome the colleagues who assumed the board of the Brazilian Association for Horticultural Sciences, our publisher, in August, for the coming three years. We wish you a pro-active, innovative and very successful term! And our sincere thanks to those who are leaving for their constant, tireless, and unrestricted support to Horticultura Brasileira.

Here it goes, our second issue of Horticultura Brasileira, volume 36, 2018.

Our cover article deals with a subject that draws everybody’s attention: the processes of registration and protection of cultivars. More interesting, the paper discusses it from the perspective of a group of experts who are frequent users of both processes and have assisted the Brazilian authorities to set the group of minimum descriptors to protect eggplant cultivars, the case study presented in the paper.

As you could have realized in our first issue, and can confirm now, we no longer publish in Portuguese. Nevertheless, there are no restrictions at all on submitting manuscripts in Portuguese or Spanish. In such cases, final versions of the approved papers are translated into English. Contact the Editorial Board if you have any questions about it! We will be glad to help!

A new year starts for Horticultura Brasileira, currently in its volume 36. We dedicated our cover this time to a leading vegetable crop, potatoes, and one of its main and most defying diseases, the bacterial wilt. Dr. Carlos Lopes heads the team that has been working with it in Brazil for already four decades and presents some of his experience with it in our cover article, focusing on the development and assessment of an elegant method of screening for resistance.

Job done: Horticultura Brasileira volume 35 is completed! And we close 2017 finishing the story we started to tell in our first issue: food losses and waste. In the beginning of the year, Dr. Gilmar Henz, expert in post-harvest diseases of vegetable crops, and also one of our previous editors-in-chief, brought a comprehensive overview of the research on post-harvest losses carried out in Brazil in the last 50 years. Now, along with Dr. Gustavo Porpino, they complete the analysis, bringing food waste to the spot and discussing how Brazil is facing this global challenge. We repeat what we said on our first issue this year, a not to be missed paper!

We reinforce here the information given when we closed last year’s volume: the Guidelines for Manuscript Submission no longer appear in our last issue, as it was for 33 years, but instead, they are published in the first issue of each volume, exclusively in English, as well as the Editor’s Letter. The Guidelines are also available, at any time, on www.horticulturabrasileira.com.br. Make use of them to speed up the reviewing process of your paper.

Do not miss it! And go beyond: come back to the paper whenever you are planning or implementing your experiment or when carrying out data analysis. Our cover illustrates the article of Camargo Filho & Camargo, who, very objectively, tell us how the production and commercialization of garlic, onion, potato, tomato and watermelon have developed in Brazil and in the world in the last decades. It is quite informative and interesting. Do not miss it!

As you can see in this issue, the number of articles published in Portuguese is progressively reducing, preparing Horticultura Brasileira to appear 100% in English from 2018 (volume 36) ahead. As informed earlier, you can go on submitting your paper in Portuguese or Spanish. No problem at all with it! In these cases, once approved for publication, the article final version is translated into English. And do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any doubts about it.

It is our pleasure to launch Horticultura Brasileira volume 35. For the second volume in a row, along the year our covers will refer to an invited article published in each respective issue. We start with a thorough review from Dr. Gilmar Henz on post-harvest losses of vegetables, a comprehensive and not to be missed analysis on how the subject has been addressed for the last 50 years.

You might be missing our letter in Portuguese, but henceforth our letters will appear only in English, pairing with Horticultura Brasileira conversion to English. Another change: we are now printing the Instructions to Authors in the first and no longer in the last issue of each year. Therefore, the guidelines appear in this issue, in the very last pages, and are always available online (www.horticulturabrasileira.com.br), as usual.

What has not changed is our good habit and duty to acknowledge the priceless contribution of the editors who are, upon their request, leaving us: Dr. Mônica Sartori de Camargo and Dr. Júlio Marcos Filho. Thank both of you a lot, and we do mean a lot!

Último número (4) pronto, volume 34 concluído! Encerramos 2016, ano em que voltamos a ilustrar as capas de Horticultura Brasileira com imagens relacionadas a um artigo completo especialmente convidado, discutindo a atualidade dos dados e informações coletados pelo naturalista Auguste de Saint-Hilaire, quando celebramos também os 200 anos da sua chegada ao Brasil. A professora Maria das Graças Lins Brandão e colaboradores, que têm uma longa, frutífera e meritória história desvendando o tesouro descoberto por Saint-Hilaire, foram convidados para escrever a respeito.
Pois bem, encerramos o ano informando que a Associação Brasileira de Horticultura, responsável pela publicação da nossa revista, decidiu pela sua conversão completa para o inglês. A partir desta decisão, passamos a aceitar submissões apenas quando os autores concordam com a publicação de seus trabalhos em inglês. Com esta mudança, extinguiu-se também a seção Página do Horticultor.
Alteramos também a publicação das Normas de Publicação. A partir de agora, as Normas não aparecerão mais no último, mas sim no primeiro número de cada volume, e somente em inglês, assim como a Carta do Editor e as informações protocolares da revista. Na página da revista na web, as Normas continuam disponíveis ininterruptamente.
Por fim, agradecemos a todos, leitores, autores, revisores e editores, que tanto contribuíram com Horticultura Brasileira em 2016. Em 2017, seguimos contando com vocês e colocando a revista à disposição.
